An Analytic Continuation on France on Spain is a set of variations on a theme from Claude Debussy’s
Iberia. The piece begins with a transcription of Debussy’s orchestral score, recast for a smaller ensemble. This is followed by an extended marimba solo, a fluttery clarinet waltz, a romantic songlike reinterpretation of the melody, and a dancelike finale. The piece ends with a quotation from Chick Corea’s
Spain.
